Welcome to the thirteenth annual Gender Census!
According to the binary model of gender, everyone fits tidily into just one of these categories:
● Woman/girl - all the time, solely, and completely
↳ (may be cisgender, transgender, intersex, etc. for the purposes of this survey)
● Man/boy - all the time, solely, and completely
↳ (may be cisgender, transgender, intersex, etc. for the purposes of this survey)
Anyone who doesn't feel like they fit into one of these two boxes is invited to participate. There are no restrictions based on location, age, or anything else.
If you hesitate or struggle to place yourself into just one of those two boxes, or if you know for sure that these boxes were not made for you, please continue!
→ The survey is international.
→ It aims to collect information about the language we use to refer to ourselves when speaking English, which may include words from other languages or cultures.
→ It asks about four things: identity words, pronouns, titles, and relationship words.
→ There is a feedback box at the end.
→ Most people find that it takes 5-6 minutes.
→ If you accidentally leave the page, your survey information is saved privately in your browser, so your progress will not be lost.
→ You can read the
FAQs here.
As in previous years, I'll go over the data and then compile it into a report. I hope that the information can be used to inform choices, persuade authorities, and help us to feel less alone.
The survey opened on 13th July 2026 and closes on 13th August 2026 at the earliest. If the survey is still open after this date, your responses will be counted.

There's a feedback box at the end if you want to tell me about mistakes I've made or survey design issues. However, I cannot fix bugs that Tally is responsible for. If you find any bugs, please
click here to report it to Tally. This includes any accessibility issues that you run into. If you intend to report bugs, please open this link in a new tab so that you can get to it easily mid-survey. (If they tell you to inform the survey designer, you can email
hello@gendercensus.com.) Thank you!
I understand that information about your gender can be very sensitive and private information.
I do not collect or have access to your name or email address. For more information, see
our page on data protection, and Tally's
privacy policy and
GDPR page.
Your anonymised responses will be made publicly viewable. When I publish the final report I also provide a spreadsheet of all survey responses that anyone can download and use for their own study and analysis. People who view the spreadsheet will not be able to connect your response with an IP address, email address, name, or precise location. The only information they have is the answers you enter into the form, and the date and time you submitted the form.
All questions are optional except the consent checkboxes below and the question asking which country you're in, which has a "prefer not to say" option.
If you close the survey partway through, your responses will still be collected, but they will not be included in the public final results and they will be deleted shortly after the survey closes.
If you accidentally leave the page, your survey information is saved privately in your browser, so your progress will not be lost. The data is deleted from your browser after you submit the survey.
